What each check proves

# What can medicine and licence checks tell me?

A drug’s approval, a person’s licence and a pharmacy’s permit answer different questions. Keep those questions apart when an ad folds them into a single claim.

## What does the FDA review?

The Food and Drug Administration is the US agency that reviews medicines; this guide uses its initials, FDA.

An FDA-approved medicine has been reviewed for a particular use; approval does not cover every claim made about it.

Ask whether the proposed use matches the reviewed use. Ask what evidence supports the answer for your own health problem.

Compounding prepares a medicine for a patient’s particular needs.

### Before a product is sold

### Approved medicine

FDA reviews how well the approved medicine works, its possible harms and how it is made.

### Compounded medicine

FDA does not check whether each made-to-order medicine works, is safe or is made well before it is sold.

This comparison reflects the position as of September 26, 2026.

## Why does made-to-order care exist?

### A patient need can differ

Position checked September 26, 2026.

FDA says a medicine prepared to order may meet a patient’s need that an approved drug cannot meet. It may also meet that need when the approved product is unavailable.

[Read FDA’s compounding questions and answers](https://www.fda.gov/drugs/human-drug-compounding/compounding-and-fda-questions-and-answers)

Ask what need the made-to-order medicine meets and why a ready-made product cannot meet it.

Federal law restricts copying available approved drugs regularly or in large amounts, as of September 26, 2026. A pharmacist or doctor may prepare a changed version if the prescriber finds that the difference matters for that patient.

A lower price alone does not meet that exception.

FDA’s national shortage list does not include injections of semaglutide or tirzepatide, as of September 26, 2026.

One local pharmacy running out does not, on its own, establish a national shortage.

## Does “research only” prove anything?

### A label is not an approval

Calling a product “research only” cannot give it approval as a medicine. FDA has warned sellers that offering unapproved drugs for people’s treatment violates federal law, as of September 26, 2026.

[Read FDA’s weight-loss drug concerns](https://www.fda.gov/drugs/drug-alerts-and-statements/fdas-concerns-unapproved-glp-1-drugs-used-weight-loss)

Ask whether the exact product is an approved medicine or a medicine lawfully made to order. A research label does not show either.

## Can reported problems tell me the odds?

### Reports are signals, not proof

Information checked September 17, 2026.

FDA says reports of a problem alone cannot prove that a medicine caused it. These reports also cannot show how often harm occurs.

[Read FDA’s reporting-system limits](https://www.fda.gov/drugs/fda-adverse-event-monitoring-system-aems/fda-adverse-event-monitoring-system-aems-public-dashboard)

An adverse event means a reported health problem. Counting these reports cannot tell you your own chance of being harmed by a medicine.

## What do the Arizona checks add?

### Permission to practice is a separate check

Board routes checked October 3, 2026.

Arizona’s Medical Board shows licence details and written board decisions for doctors with MD after their names. Doctors with DO after their names use a different board.

[Read the MD board’s search information](https://www.azmd.gov/DoctorSearch/DoctorSearch)

The record helps you check permission to provide care. The treating person still needs to explain why a treatment fits your health problem.

As of October 6, 2026, older board decisions and some complaint records may be missing from Arizona’s main online licence pages. An empty page is not a complete history.

Ask the board for older public decisions about that licence and for public meeting notes and notices.

Older decisions may still appear in public meeting notes and notices. Some complaint and investigation details cannot be shared.
